Santo Stefano, Sardinia: 470 tourists in quarantine in a village

The days can flow the same as before on the island of Santo Stefano, archipelago of La Maddalena. In the resort of the same name in northern Sardinia, swimming on the private beach, tennis matches and dinners at the restaurant are lived with a certain restlessness: no one can go out anymore. 470, between guests and workers, await the result of the swab: two days ago a 60-year-old seasonal employee was in fact hospitalized in Sassari for Covid 19. Hence the rigorous (and golden) quarantine within the village borders, even if – as reported by La Nuova Sardegna – there are those who have already tried to escape: two vacationers, headed for Olbia airport, have been blocked.

For the mayor of La Maddalena, Luca Montella, there is no alarm but the need to test. In the meantime, it has issued a new ordinance: a mask for those who walk downtown even in the morning, not only after 6 pm. Also in Arzachena, the reference municipality of the Costa Smeralda, there are new restrictions after the discovery of cases among the vacationers of a yacht and others on the mainland. And so the Sardinia of tourism is confirmed exposed to the virus and its consequences.

The Santo Stefano case follows that of Carloforte where, at the beginning of August, there was a surge of infections among the very young participants in two parties with collective dances. Mass screening succeeded in isolating 11 infected from over 400 swabs. Most recent the discovery of positivity among the Roman boys returning from Porto Rotondo, in Gallura: they had been to an evening with over 500 people, some of them coming from Ibiza.

Yet, just past August, the closure of the discos arranged at the national level has created controversy not only among the insiders in the sector for economic losses: attacks also by the Northern League which supports the majority. L’order of the President of the Region, Christian Solinas, gave the ok to open-air discos, but with two meters of distance on the track and one for all. The new ban, however, argue the detractors, would multiply the end-of-summer gatherings in private villas or on the beach, without any control. While in Sardinian airports only in Cagliari, from today, you can do quick tests for those arriving from countries at risk. In Olbia from tomorrow, then Alghero.

In the forefront, as always, the mayors of the small municipalities: they are the ones, again as it happened in spring, who do the live counting of the cases: from Ogliastra di Orosei to Maddalena, up to Sulcis di Nuxis. They do so via a press release or with a post on social media to warn citizens. The bulletin of the Regional Crisis Unit in July had recorded zero cases for several consecutive days. From the end of July there has been a rise with 110 positives as of 17 August, in all there are 1500. The imbalance is still towards the north of the island: 910 cases between Sassarese and Gallura. This is now the new frontier: beaches and vacation spots, no more hospital wards and residences for the elderly where the virus had spread between March and April.
