“Santa Evita”: 70 years ago Eva Perón died in Argentina and the unlikely journey of her corpse began

In 1971, the fear of a major Peronist revolution subsided, and Eva Perón may be reunited with her husband. Juan Perón is currently living in exile in Spain. Together with his new wife Isabel Martínez, he takes care of and stores the embalmed body there until the couple returns to Argentina in 1973. Juan Perón is re-elected there, but dies during his term in office.

His wife Isabel takes over, as she is vice president at the time. In the end, it is also she who ensures that Eva Perón’s corpse ends up back in Argentina. Juan and Eva are then laid out in state, before they are both buried together.
