Sander Sjøkvist Shines on the Football Field: From Waiter to Winger

SØR ARENA (Nettavisen): Should Sander Sjøkvist need a summer job during the football break in the next few weeks, there are guaranteed restaurants with Michelin stars fighting over the winger’s waiter signature.

This has not always been the case.

– I worked as a waiter for a year at Sjøhuset, but was nowhere near the deliveries I have had on the football field this year. I was simply miserable. It was probably a good thing it didn’t end up being that job, smiles Sander Sjøkvist to Nettavisen after Start’s 3-0 victory in the last league round before the summer holidays.

Best on the edge

The 24-year-old served up his ninth goal-scoring number for the season with his childhood club’s leading goal in the celebratory performance at home against Mjøndalen.

– Since the start of the season, Luc Mares and I have had a very good chemistry, where he finds me easily going forward in the field. I get good passes, and if I get past the first stop it’s always dangerous, says the right winger.

Start’s number 21 places a corner kick from the left. He finds you anywhere with a pass from the right. Life on the edge is wonderful. In what looks to be the best season ever.

Which can still be topped with direct promotion. After a half-played series, only six points separate Fredrikstad in second place from Start’s sixth place.

– I feel I have delivered well until the holiday, and I have never had so many goalscoring passes before. I am looking forward to continuing the streak after the summer break. As a team, we want ever better performances and have certainly not given up on direct promotion, says Sander Sjøkvist.

He can lose

The performance paid off a place on the team of the round at Nettavisen. Together with Luc Mares, who was third last on Start’s 1-0 scoring. Many believe the Dutchman is one of the best centre-backs in the Obos league.

The star is amazed: – Absolutely crazy!

Where Sander Sjøkvist is probably one of the more attractive in a transfer window that opens on 1 August. Where the autumn season starts five days later away towards Kristiansund.

– We have known that Sander has a fantastic right foot all along, and so we have been able to set him up in good positions where he can use it. Sander has also made strides in his game which means that he gets more opportunities. It would surprise me greatly if he is not attractive to clubs higher up with those achievements during the spring season, says Start coach Sindre Tjelmeland.

He is the boss who fears losing goal-dangerous players in the transfer window. Start scores the most goals of anyone in the Obos league.

– Sports manager Magni Fannberg manages the logistics, but players can become attractive when we are so good offensively. Tom Strannegård, Zakaria Sawo, Sander Sjøkvist and others will always attract attention, concludes Start’s coach Sindre Tjelmeland.
