Sanctions against Russia urged Biden to introduce US senators on January 19

US senators, who recently visited Ukraine on a working visit, called on NATO, President Joe Biden’s administration and their fellow Democrats to take decisive action to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin’s apparent threat to invade Ukraine. In particular, they called for immediate sanctions against Russia.

“So far, no one has hit Vladimir Putin in the nose. I think the alliance, our friends in NATO and the bipartisan majority are ready to help Ukraine to make sure that if this (invasion – ed.) happens, then Vladimir Putin gets on the nose,” said Senator Roger Wicker.

Lawmakers have taken a hard line in their calls for the administration to impose sanctions on Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and provide Ukraine with defensive military assistance ahead of any Russian invasion.

However, senators are still divided on whether sanctions should be imposed on the pipeline as a warning to Putin now or after the invasion of Ukraine is carried out.
