Samsung would limit the performance of 10,000 applications on its phones

Panic at Samsung. The South Korean manufacturer is accused of limiting the performance of its phones using its application Game Optimizing Service (GOS), supposed to optimize the resources of its in-game smartphones and avoid overheating. Angry customers posted a list than 10,000 apps subject to a performance cap, and these limitations would not be reserved for large 3D titles. We find among others Netflix, TikTok, but also Office and even… Samsung software.

Even more surprising: the applications of benchmark for measuring phone performance are not included in the list. A Youtuber has could prove it by renaming the 3DMark application package to Genshin Impact, a game present on the list. The result is final, as the score obtained goes from 2,618 to 1,141 points. The number of frames per second falls from 15.70 FPS to 6.80 FPS on average.

The recent Galaxy S22 are not affected: the site AndroidAuthority explains that the Game Optimizing Service app is presented as incompatible with these models by the Galaxy Store. On other phones like the S21, GOS cannot be disabled. It is difficult at this time to know precisely which devices are affected.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened in the world of Android smartphones. Last year, OnePlus admitted to intentionally limiting the performance of its OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro to relieve the devices’ battery. Samsung has apparently launched an internal investigation while customers are now awaiting an official statement from the manufacturer.
