Biogen is a leading US pharmaceutical company best known for its agents that work against neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. It has 33 new drug candidates in the pipeline and also has several Phase 3 clinical trials pending on antidepressant drug candidates.

According to the newspaper, Biogen itself approached Samsung for the deal. Biogen had a market value of $35 billion until the news came out. Shares of Biogen shot up more than 9 percent in the Nasdaq after the news came out. If it comes to a takeover, it would be Samsung’s biggest deal ever. Further details about the deal were not immediately known.

Biogen was co-founded in 1978 by two Nobel laureates Walter Gilbert and Phillip Sharp. Gilbert was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in DNA research in 1980. Sharp won the Prize in Medicine in 1993 for his discovery of gene splicing.
