Samsung tests update that reverses app performance limitations in S22 devices – Tablets and phones – News

Samsung appears to be testing a firmware update in South Korea that will give Galaxy S22 users more control over the performance-limiting measures that the manufacturer has built into its devices. It is unclear when the update will be rolled out globally.

At least it turns out from screenshots that have appeared on the South Korean Samsung Community Forum. It shows release notes of a new firmware update for a Galaxy S22 device and, via translation, it can be concluded that Galaxy S22 users will soon be able to lift the performance-limiting measures on their devices. According to the release notes, the company would make changes to its Game Optimizing Service, or CIS.

Beginning of March several users discovered that Samsung would limit the performance of apps on Samsung S22 devices, among others. Among other things, because the GOS software can also be found on S21, S20 and S10 devices. Shortly afterwards it was an active user from South Korea’s Meeco tech forum, compiled a list of all apps that would be performance-limited through Samsung’s Game Optimizing Service. That list contains about 10,000 apps, of which 3300 are games and 6500 other apps that are not games.

Notably, performance of benchmark apps such as 3DMark, Antutu, GeekBench, and PCMark are not affected by CIS. A South Korean YouTube user showed that recently by renaming the 3DMark benchmark app to that of smartphone game Genshin Impact. The YouTuber then ran the Wild Life Extreme benchmark on a Galaxy S22 device, after which the frame rate in the benchmark dropped from 2618 to 1141.

Samsung responded on the discovery and states that throttling of apps is needed to counteract heat development that occurs when gaming on the phones for a long time. The company didn’t release an official list of apps it’s performance-limiting, but did say it’s planning an update after which performance throttling would be disabled. Tweakers wrote a background article about Samsung and other manufacturers secretly limiting the performance of apps on smartphones.
