Samsung introduced its new locator SmartTag 2 with a duration of up to 700 days
It is sold in the Czech Republic from today and one piece will cost 990 CZK, four will cost 3,190 CZK
In addition to new tablets, headphones and the Galaxy S23 FE smartphone, Samsung also launched the second generation SmartTag locator. The first one was unveiled in April 2021 and hit the Czech market for 799 CZK. Now Samsung has overtaken Apple again and introduced SmartTag 2. What can the new product do?
SmartTag 2nd generation locator
The first thing you immediately notice is the changed design. The original SmartTag was actually square with rounded sides with a loop at one of the tops. The novelty resembles an ellipse in shape, the loop is also significantly larger and metal, so the body of the locator should not be scratched right away. Of course, the increased IP67 resistance against water and dust is not missing.
But the most important are the localization functions themselves. Instead of GPS, which would drain the battery a lot, there is a special Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and also a chip for ultra-wideband signals (UWB). From the competition, SmartTag has also learned to search in augmented reality using the smartphone camera, at a distance of up to 120 meters from the tag. It also offers an improved compass feature for finding a lost locator.
Security is handled by Samsung’s proprietary Knox system. This means that each SmartTag can only be paired with one device and one SmartThings Find account. You can also scan the foreign locator on the SmartThings Station wireless charging pad. The pendant can be attached to any mobile phone with NFC and read information about it.
As for the battery, the SmartTag again uses a classic CR2032 coin-cell battery, so you can’t charge it with a cable like a battery-powered device. The manufacturer states that in normal mode the battery in the SmartTag will last 2 to 500 days, in energy saving mode up to 700 days, which is twice as much as the previous generation. However, it is not clear how the two usage modes differ in their functions.
Price and availability
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 is sold on the Czech market from today, in white and black color variants. The price has been set for 990 crowns including VAT, you can buy a convenient pack of four for 3,199 crowns. In comparison, Apple’s AirTag it costs 790 crownsand you still have engraving included in the price.
