Samsung Odyssey G7 and G9 announced: the impressive PC monitors and extra extra wide curved

Samsung has unveiled the new G7 and G9 monitors with 1000R curves and 240 Hz QLED panels, all of which will be marketed under the gaming brand Odyssey.

You’ll find a bunch of monitors with a wide-screen 32: 9 49-inch on the market, but Samsung Odyssey G9 is very special. Indeed, he joined a VA QLED slab 5K definition (5120 x 1440 pixels) with a refresh rate of 240 Hz and a response time of 1 ms, the carrier and HDR1000 an unusual curvature 1000R.

Desktop curvature is expressed numerically, a screen with a 1000R curvature refers to a curved screen of radius of 1000 mm, or one meter. Curiously, this radius measurement also serves to recommended maximum viewing distance. This Samsung screen thus has a more pronounced curve than most other very large screens.

Note thatIt is compatible with AMD and Nvidia FreeSync GSync, Which seems mandatory when one claims to sell a monitor for gamers. The G9 also features a VA panel with a color layer Quantum Dot (hence the QLED). Choosing a VA panel provides a refresh rate and quick response time, while the Quantum Dot layer ensures bright, punchy colors. However, VA panels have limited viewing angles (better than TN panels), and therefore the image degrades when viewed from the side, the increased curvature could actually correct this weakness of VA technology.

A small point to note though: we do not yet know its connectors, however it seems complicated to get 240 Hz. Neither the DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 are not able to serve the definition 5120 x 1440 pixels at 240 Hz. Only the HDMI 2.1 is capable of it, unfortunately no compatible graphics card exists yet. Note, finally, that we do not know yet if this monitor will be marketed in France, but if that is the case it will be sold around 1500 euros.

Odyssey G7 size classic but a curvature 1000R

If the G9 is just too expensive or too big for you, Odyssey models G7 might be more to your liking. Available in 32 and 27 inches, they also benefit from VA QLED panels with a refresh rate of 240 Hz and a response time of 1 ms, but a slightly lower brightness of around 350 nits (compared to 500 nits for the G9) with peaks at HDR600.

They are also 16: 9 screens with WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels). Surprisingly, however, they have the same curvature 1000RThis might seem strange enough with this display format. Like the G9, monitors Odyssey G7 are also planned for the second quarter 2020. Unlike the G9, which have a white back, G7 are only available in black.
