Samsung goes for soft tones and 120Hz screens for the latest “A’s”, resembling the Galaxy S23.

The “A” from Samsung is only in third place in the hierarchy of the Galaxy series (after the “Z” jigsaws and the top “S” smartphones), but in terms of sales, this series is clearly at the top of the South Korean manufacturer. Today, at the Czech premiere, Samsung presented the first trio of this year’s “áček”, of which it will be the most equipped Galaxy A54. However, it has improved a lot between generations Galaxy A34who left the lower floors and left the entire foundation to the model Galaxy A14. All today’s news are united by the new design that the phones inherited from the Galaxy S23 series.

How to distinguish the two new Samsungs from the front? The Galaxy A54 is slightly smaller and has a punch-hole display, the Galaxy A34 is slightly larger and has a visible cutout in the display

Although Samsung showed us three models in Prague (or four, if we take the LTE and 5G version of one model separately), the most interesting models are the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54. These are supposed to be the drivers of the middle class from Samsung, but the equation “the higher the number, the bigger the display” no longer applies, because the Galaxy A34 has a larger display panel than the Galaxy A54. Both innovations differ in the materials used, processors and also cameras. The colors are, with one exception, the same in both cases.

And we acknowledge a more pleasant haptic response or top software support. Both flagship models will receive up to Android 17 and security updates until 2028!

A cheaper model with a matte back

The main distinguishing feature of the new models is a trio of separately protruding cameras on the back, which have metal rings around them, in which the sensors are slightly embedded. On the Galaxy A54, they stand out a little more above the surrounding glossy surface (Gorilla Glass 5), while on the Galaxy A34, the back is made of matte plastic, which looks more “premium”. And the intergenerational loss of the depth lens, which will be replaced by artificial intelligence in a much better way, doesn’t matter either.

The Galaxy A54 got a 6.4″ AMOLED with a punch-through selfie

The main cameras have slightly different resolutions, but the higher-end model has a larger photochip and a larger range of optical stabilization (1.5°). In this respect, the phone is on par with the much more expensive Galaxy S23. All pixels are also used for focusing. The manufacturer calls this solution All-pixel AF, and it is supposed to be a very similar solution to the Dual Pixel in the Galaxy S23 series. The main sensor is complemented by an 8 Mpx wide-angle and a 5 Mpx macro, the phone shoots videos in maximum UHD resolution at 30 fps. The Galaxy A34’s selfie remains at 13 megapixels, while the Galaxy A54’s still has 32 Mpx.

The second identification mark will be the display. The Galaxy A54 has a “more modern” 6.4″ AMOLED display with a punch hole, the lower model got a 6.6″ AMOLED with a notch. The resolution of both displays is Full HD+, and according to our first impressions, this time too is more than enough. In direct sunlight, you’ll appreciate the higher brightness of the display, which reached up to 1,000 nits in automatic mode, as well as the Vision Booster function, which improves readability a little more by adjusting the color tones. The fingerprint reader is part of the display in optical form.

You can recognize the Galaxy A34 by its display cutout

The displays of both new products now support a 120Hz display refresh rate, the biggest shift (from 90 to 120 Hz) is visible in the Galaxy A34. In addition, a dynamic refresh rate appears for the first time with the “eyes”, but it can only switch between 60 and 120 Hz. There are far more transition steps in the Galaxy S series, but even so, this detail helps Samsung label the new models as “two-day” smartphones. The 5,000mAh battery remains at the same capacity as last year, the maximum charging power is again 25 Watts. You can get to fifty percent in half an hour, you have to buy the charger separately this time as well.

eSIM and Wi-Fi 6 penetrates the lower floors

The chassis of both novelties is made of plastic, and the height of the phones has decreased slightly between generations. And this at the expense of slightly greater thickness, width and weight. The phones still have an increased IP67 resistance (30 minutes 1 meter below the water level) or support for stereo speakers, when a handset above the display is added to the bottom handset. The speakers are louder, and in the Galaxy A54, the stereo is supplemented with Dolby Atmos mode with more pronounced bass. During a call, both models can effectively suppress background noise and highlight your spoken word.

The phones are Dual SIM, so you can insert, for example, a private and corporate nanoSIM card. However, the second slot is a hybrid, so you have to choose. The Galaxy A54 has a slight upper hand this time, which is the first representative of the series to support eSIM. If you add the second card in electronic form, you can use the second slot for up to a 1TB microSD card. A lower model cannot be selected.

Both phones have three cameras on the back, which differ only in the main sensor. The Galaxy A54 has a 50 Mpx sensor with better stabilization, the Galaxy A34 has a 48 Mpx camera with OIS. About both novelties, Samsung highlights better quality night images, whether this will also apply in practice, we will have to wait for editorial testing

Connectivity is of course targeted and fifth generation networks provided by two different chipsets. While the well-known 6nm Dimensity 1080 processor goes into action in the Galaxy A34, the performance is handled by the new 5nm Exynos 1380 in the higher-built sibling. This is a new and practically unknown processor in the portfolio, but it increases CPU performance by a fifth and graphics performance by a quarter between generations. Neither processor will be a record breaker, but they will do their job even when playing games. Even thanks to economical production technologies, the new “A” batteries can last up to two days on a single charge.

At first glance, the Galaxy A14 looks cheaper. It has a prominent chin and a scalloped back cover. The phone received a 6.6″ 90HZ LCD display, three cameras (50 + 2 +2) and runs on Exynos 1330 (LTE) or Dimensity 700. In the Czech Republic, it will be offered in both network versions

It also affected the operating memory, which is always 8 GB in the Galaxy A54, only the 128 GB variant of the Galaxy A34 received 6 GB of RAM. Both models also have virtual RAM, which takes the same amount of capacity, i.e. 6 or 8 GB, from the internal fast storage of the UFS 3.0 type. It has a capacity of 128 or 256 GB, you can supplement it with up to 1TB microSD cards. The traditionally rich connectivity of the above-built model is further embellished by Wi-Fi 6 support. The phones are equipped with Android 13 with the latest version of the One UI superstructure. Users of the new “hacks” can look forward to four successor generations of Android and five years of security patches.

The Galaxy A34 has the same colors, with the only difference being that instead of white, the phone will be offered in silver.
