Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro and Ultra Review

  • Galaxy Book3 Pro
  • Galaxy Book3 Ultra

In brief

The Galaxy Book3 Pro 16″ is remarkably much heavier than its extremely light predecessor. So it’s not really a featherweight, but still one of the lighter options with this screen size. The Book3 Pro has a nice, sturdy housing and a pleasant working environment, plus a very good OLED screen with a high resolution and refresh rate and excellent color reproduction. The battery life is especially good under load, although the system performance of the brand new Intel Core i7-1360P CPU does drop quite a bit. When plugged in, they are as expected fine. Keep in mind that there are plenty of 16″ laptops that weigh a hundred to two hundred grams more, but have much faster hardware on board. Moreover, they often cost less, because the Book3 Pro is not cheap for a laptop with this processor.

In brief

The Galaxy Book3 Ultra is Samsung’s fastest laptop, equipped with a fast 13th generation Intel H processor and an RTX 4000 video card in a housing of 1.8 kg. There aren’t many other laptops with those features that are this light, but between 2 and 2.5kg there are many more options. They often also have much more powerful hardware, because considering the specifications, the Book3 Ultra is on the expensive side. An important disadvantage is the non-expandable working memory of 16GB. That is not to say that the Book3 Ultra does not have good features. The housing is nice and sturdy, the working environment pleasant and the battery life for a laptop with these characteristics is relatively good. Samsung has also built in a very nice OLED screen with a high resolution and refresh rate and excellent color reproduction.

Last year, Samsung was suddenly back on the Dutch market with its Galaxy Book laptops, after LG had started its Gram series a year earlier. The Korean arch rivals had been selling their laptops abroad for some time and where LG mainly caused a furore with luxury ultralights, Samsung’s range was immediately a lot wider. In the form of the Galaxy Book2 Pro, for example, Samsung had a Gram competitor in its range, but there were also heavier and cheaper laptops with a separate video card.

A year later, the economic wind has turned and that headwind has recently made LG decide to leave the Dutch market again. Samsung will continue to do this and is even expanding its range. There are currently no fewer than 31 versions of the Galaxy Book3 series in the Pricewatch, from a compact 13.3″ convertible to a powerful 16″ laptop.

In this review we focus on the new top model in the series, the Galaxy Book3 Ultra with 16″ display, and the largest laptop in the Galaxy Book3 Pro series, with an equally large screen. Striking about the Galaxy Book3 Pro laptops Compared to their predecessors, the main thing is that they are much heavier, and they are also slightly larger, with Samsung switching to 14″ and 16″ panels with a 16:10 ratio this year, instead of the 13.3″ one. and last year’s 15.6″ 16:9 ratio displays. Instead of a remarkably light 1.11kg with the 15.6″ Book2 Pro, the 16″ Book3 Pro puts a 1. 56kg on your desk: no less than 40 percent more.

The Galaxy Book3 Pro series thus loses a unique feature, but still retains enough strengths on paper. One of them is the new screen: an OLED panel with a high 2880×1800 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The hardware, a brand new 13th generation Intel Core processor, is housed in a luxurious all-metal chassis that is still very thin. That is also allowed, because our 2000-euro test model is certainly not the cheapest laptop with these kinds of specifications. The Galaxy Book 3 Ultra promises even more computing power on top of the Pro model. The top model has a faster 45W-H processor and a separate Nvidia video card from the new RTX 4000 series. The costs therefore rise even further, up to 2900 euros in the case of our test model, not even the most expensive version. We are curious whether the Ultra model can live up to that high price.
