The Minister of Economic Development and the role of Prime Minister Draghi: the last card available to Italy
Giorgetti the plastic representation of how one can win by losing. Because it is true that Salvini reaffirmed his leadership in the League, but equally true that – reaffirming the loyalty of the Northern League Draghi government – he went along with the political line of his number two. And after all this was and remains Giorgetti’s function in the party: he does not have the stigmata of the leader and too lazy to try. The battles that go into each other are aimed at a goal, not a role. And aiming for the goal, consolidates its role in the League. So he did this time too: he planned to bring the Carroccio to Draghi and (so far) he succeeded. He did not sell himself to the premier, as his Salvinian detractors claim, but rather tried to make the party make an investment in Draghi’s brand. Therefore he says with satisfaction that if my secretary and the premier are happy, I am happy.

It would be even more so if the former president of the ECB remained at Palazzo Chigi. Yesterday in public, interviewed by Bruno Vespa, he limited himself to saying that a possible rise of Draghi at the Quirinale a fear that some might even see as a guarantee. But the other day in private he explained his reasons to a center-right executive who asked him why he didn’t want the premier al Colle: I don’t want anything. I think he is the last card available to Italy. Look around you: we have no more reserves of the Republic. Indirectly he has thus proved the right to words credited to Berlusconi on the poor ability of Salvini and Meloni to lead the country. A problem that Giorgetti also extends to the opposing front. Because the center-right also has water everywhere, but – according to the Northern League minister – there is nothing or almost nothing there. And that Pd that goes on the hunt for allies to build a coalition, reminds him of the old Dalemian power scheme of the Oak with the bushes around it. His pessimism on the current ruling class is equal to the low consideration he has of parties, highlighted in the interview with the Press that aroused bipartisan curiosity.

But when center-right exponents, and even center-left ministers, went to compulsive it to understand if he imagined a different political geography for the future, Giorgetti immediately put an end to the discussion: Salvini the secretary of the league and I am in the league. It would be a mistake to interpret this concept as an act of mere submission to the boss. If anything, listening to the rest of the sentence, a gesture of party loyalty: Matteo decides. I will continue to say mine. And there is no doubt that he has said things so far. Meanwhile, he did not share the electoral campaign, during which we did not value the government’s results, without understanding that the mood had changed in the country. There is trace of this in the reasoning carried out yesterday, when he underlined how – with the entry into the Draghi cabinet – we knew that it was an investment. Now that we have sown, we must wait for the harvest. A clear allusion to the Salvini’s nervousness, who after the vote immediately challenged Draghi on land registry reform, committing an error of method and merit. Method because, as recognized by a leader of the League, by dint of penultimatum we are wearing ourselves out. Of merit because today there is no alternative to the government pact.

From here on it will be interesting to see how Salvini moves, who has decided to deal personally with the former president of the ECB the government dossiers, right now that the competition reform and the budget are coming to an end. Accompanied to the door, Giorgetti waits to be called back to the room. Sometimes you can win by losing.

But the number two of the League is not exempt from blame for the conditions in which the League finds itself. His endorsement by Calenda in Rome, for example, was experienced in the center-right as a reaction to the choices for the Administrative: But he was there at the meetings and kept quiet, remember the allies. And in these cases the logic of silence-dissent does not apply. And besides, the candidates of Turin and Varese, who are in the ballot, are his. Were they going badly, the rule of winning by losing would not apply.
