The European health watchdog has highlighted a persistent food poisoning outbreak in Ireland and four other EU states that has been linked to contaminated chicken in kebab products. Since mid-2017, 210 cases of Salmonella Virchow ST16 have been reported, including four in Ireland, with all four Irish cases being hospitalised – the highest rate for any country. Although most cases have been linked to local restaurants serving kebab meat, the source of the infections could not be determined in the absence of batch numbers for the contaminated products. The European Centre for Disease Control warns that further infections are likely to occur until contamination points in the food chain are identified.

In light of recent events, it is imperative that we remain vigilant when it comes to the food we consume. The Salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated chicken in kebabs serves as a reminder that food safety should be taken seriously. It is important for food establishments to maintain high standards of hygiene and ensure that the products they serve are safe for consumption. Individuals can also play their part by staying informed and exercising caution when it comes to the food they eat. The risks associated with contaminated food can be devastating, but with proper precautions and awareness, we can minimize these risks and protect ourselves and our loved ones. Stay safe, stay informed, and stay healthy.
