Sales of smartphones fell sharply: Samsung hit hard

Market researcher IDC treasure that in the first quarter of 2020, some 275 million devices were delivered. That is a drop of 11 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to the researchers.

Strategy Analytics research bureau estimate the decrease even higher at 17 percent. Two other research firms, Counterpoint and Canalys, both estimate the decline at 13 percent.

According to the agencies, the decrease is mainly due to the corona crisis. Many factories in Asia were closed to contain the virus. Global demand for smartphones has also declined due to lockdown measures in place in many countries. Especially in China the decrease in telephone sales is very large, according to Counterpoint even 27 percent.

Supply iPhones immediately

Market leader Samsung was hit hard in the first quarter. IDC calculated that the South Korean tech giant delivered more than 58 million smartphones, about 14 million less than a year earlier. Chinese Huawei sold over 48 million devices, ten million less. Apple’s supply of iPhones remained roughly the same at 37 million.

Demand for smartphones will also be curbed in the rest of the year by the consequences of the corona pandemic. At the earliest, growth in the fourth quarter cannot be achieved again compared to the previous year, IDC estimates.
