… many environmentally friendly electric vehicles are late or cannot be delivered this year. Which has a negative impact on the CO2 balance of the importers.
Another 11.3 percent drop! In July, 22,641 cars sold 2,877 fewer vehicles in Switzerland than in the same month of the previous year. The cumulative decline compared to 2019 after seven months of sales is already 31.1 percent – almost a third or 56,812 fewer cars!

The Auto Switzerland importers association is very worried: “The monthly declines will be somewhat smaller,” says Auto Switzerland spokesman Christoph Wolnik. However, he is not very confident that much of this backlog can be made up by the end of the year.

The reluctance to buy in the face of economic uncertainties and the renewed rise in Covid 19 infection numbers could further slow down the hoped-for recovery. “The entire Swiss automotive industry – from suppliers to brand dealers – is groaning under the effects of the Corona crisis,” summarizes Wolnik, summarizing the current tense situation. It is currently far from certain that whether Auto Switzerland’s cautious forecast of 240,000 new passenger cars can still be achieved under these circumstances.

Impending CO2Sanctions
The car industry is also plagued by other worries: CO threatens at the end of the year2– Penalties for non-compliance with the CO tightened since January 1, 20202-Aims. Wolnik: “Due to pandemic delays in market launches or the reduced allocation of efficient electric models, many importers have to retain their original CO2– drop targets. In many neighboring countries, there are high premiums for the purchase of new electric vehicles. Only a few cantons have introduced similar measures in our country. The situation has worsened as a result of the corona crisis because the available quantities have been reduced due to long plant closings. »

Wolnik emphasizes that his industry CO2-Reduction goals not want to question in itself. He would not find punishment fair under the given difficult circumstances. And so he addresses politicians with the request: “We don’t want any money, we just need a year more to implement and achieve these goals because of the corona pandemic.”
