Ddiscovering the forest for which you are responsible as an elected official, that was the goal of this training day organized by the town hall of Saint-André-de-Boëge, at the beginning of August, in conjunction with the National Forestry Office. Gérard Hell, forest ranger in charge of the management of the Voirons massif in the Natura 2000 zone was invited as part of his duties. He led this day which was for the newly elected and even the old ones a real discovery.
The group of about twenty participants climbed from the Fillinges bridge by road and paths on the heights overlooking Boëge and Saint-André. Along the way, they were able to become aware of the management of the forest. On the explanations of Gérard Hell, they were able to see and understand the thinned fir plantations, the forest markings. An explanation of visu was possible on the plantations with rare cuts where everything grows in exuberance and the cuts known as gardening where certain species are pruned or removed according to the case according to the surrounding species.
Rare and protected species
Respect for biodiversity and the bark beetles that attack trees were also discussed. Gérard Hell explains: “ The bark beetle attacks spruces and them alone. To prevent a recurrence after felling, it is recommended to replant other species such as larch or Douglas-fir. In addition, for the protection of species, it is desirable to leave some dead trees so that woodpeckers or great spotted woodpeckers can dig their nests. There is also another rare kind of bird, the little owl, a kind of pygmy owl that exists on the Voirons, but it only comes out at night. »
Elected officials and spouses were also able to discover the yellow-bellied toad. Guard Gérard Hell makes a point of clarifying: “ It is a protected species that sometimes lives in small forest ponds that form in paths rutted by skidding machines. Its dorsal face is grayish brown and dull, which provides it with camouflage within its natural habitat. The ventral side, yellow with black spots, contrasts sharply with its dorsal side. The toad can reveal it to a potential attacker in the event of a threat in order to frighten his attacker. If he sends out his sticky liquid and you touch his face or eyes, there will be an intense allergic reaction. »
After the discovery, the whole group gathered at the Cuffat house to share a meal from the bag.
