Safe teaching: primary school designs glass walls for desks

The idea was conceived by the school’s engineering lab coordinator, school director Marian van Maarseveen told RTL Nieuws. Then a group of teachers brainstormed. “We didn’t want to sit still, but think about what is possible.”

It was especially important that the children should be able to receive decent education. “We have a fairly large building and could provide the 1.5 meter rule in the classes, but then a teacher cannot get to the students. We want a teacher to be able to see what the student is doing.”

production

The school has recently been working on the idea. In collaboration with an engineering firm, the first copies of the ‘FleXX’ were produced last week. The production costs are 50 euros per table. The school has already tested the screens on a few children.

“It takes some getting used to, because you’re in a kind of cabin,” says Maarseveen. “But you get used to it very quickly. We tested the screens with workbooks and the board. You can read both, because it is not reflective glass. Sound can still be heard.” The teacher can safely ride on an office chair between the children to help.

Other measures

According to Van Maarseveen, the special walls are a step in the right direction, but other measures must also be taken to allow the children to go to school safely. “In the classroom where the test screens are now, we have also created a walking route that children must follow. They must not just get up, they must first raise their fingers.”

The school now has enough screens for one class. “But we can and want to expand.” However, the screens are not a solution for all children, Van Maarseveen acknowledges. “This is not suitable for toddlers. I doubt that they can stay behind a table.”
