‘Sad development’: the Netherlands drops in the LGBTI ranking in Europe, now in 13th place

The Netherlands is therefore lower than Belgium, Spain and Finland. Malta leads the ranking† The bottom two places are for Turkey and Azerbaijan.


Our country scores 56 out of 100 possible points when it comes to human rights for LGBTI persons. Captain Malta gets 92.

According to Ilga Europe, the organization that compiles the list, there are many reports of discrimination in our country. The long waiting times for gender transition operations also play a role.

Sprint to the leading group

COC Netherlands calls it ‘sad’ that our country scores so poorly, when we were once ahead of the world.

“I call on the government to take a sprint and push through to the leading group of countries where LGBTI human rights are well regulated,” says COC chairman Astrid Oosenbrug. “Like when our country was the first to open marriage to same-sex couples.”


Ilga Europe advises our country to quickly arrange a ban on conversion therapy. In February was a majority of the House of Representatives for an initiative law to criminalize it. A one-year prison sentence will be imposed.
