(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Kyung-yoon =’Korean Monster’ Ryu Hyun-jin (33, Toronto Blue Jays) has been selected as the winner of the’Warren Span Award’ given to the best left-handed pitcher in the MLB.
Korea is, of course, the first in Asia.
The Warren Spansang Selection Committee announced on the 22nd (Korean time), “Ryu Hyun-jin performed remarkably in the difficult environment caused by the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).”
The Warren Span Award was created to honor Major League legendary left-handed pitcher Warren Span.
Span is one of the best left-handed pitchers with an average ERA of 363 wins and 245 losses in 750 MLB games.
He set the record for the most winning left-handed pitcher and was also dedicated to the Hall of Fame.
The Warren Span Award Selection Committee has been announcing the winners since 1999 to commemorate Span’s achievements. A total of 21 winners came out until last year.
Randy Johnson (retired) and Clayton Kershaw (Los Angeles Dodgers) have won the most four times.
Ryu Hyun-jin increased his chances of winning by taking the top spot in the MLB’s overall ERA in the 2019 season, but was disappointed by Patrick Corbin (Washington Nationals).
However, he made a big success again this season and won the Warren Span Award.
Ryu Hyun-jin recorded an average of 2.69 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 12 games this season.
Among the left-handed pitchers who filled the regular innings, he was ranked 3rd in many wins, 2nd in ERA, and 2nd most strikeouts.
He led Toronto’s postseasonal advancement and took third place in the Cy Young American League poll for the best MLB pitcher.
Unfortunately, we cannot see Ryu Hyun-jin directly receiving the Warren Span Award.
The Warren Span Award selection committee said, “We have decided not to hold an awards ceremony this year due to the spread of Corona 19.”
