‘Rwandan Genocide’ funder arrested in France after 25 years | NOW

Felicien Kabuga, suspected of funding the genocide in Rwanda, was arrested near Paris on Saturday, the French Ministry of Justice has said. Kabuga has been searched for 25 years.

Kabuga is now 84 years old and was one of the most wanted men in Rwanda. An international arrest warrant had been issued against him and a premium of $ 5 million (over $ 4.6 million) had been made to his name.

The businessman is accused of financing the military personnel who murdered 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in one hundred days in 1994.

Kabuga was found in a flat in Asnières-sur-Seine, a city near Paris. There he lived under a false name. He was arrested by a French arrest team early in the morning on Saturday.

“Since 1994, Felicien Kabuga, also known as the financier of the Rwandan genocide, has remained unpunished in Germany, Belgium, Kenya, Congo and Switzerland,” said the French Ministry of Justice.

Kabuga will first be brought before the French court and later also before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

The other two main suspects of the Rwandan genocide, Augustin Bizimana and Protais Mpiranya, are still on the run.
