De Wild emphasizes in conversation with Özcan Akyol that he still gets along well with Gulsen. He does not want to label their relationship as a failure. “When a relationship doesn’t quite work. And you decide not to continue, that is not necessarily a failed relationship. It was the relationship of my life. It was fantastic! We had a great few years.”
It wasn’t that either of them pulled the plug, but they both wanted to live their own lives. “We are both insecurely attached. She with her past and I with my past.” Gulsen grew up with a father with an alcohol problem, De Wild in a strictly religious family in which he could not fit in well. “That goes very well if we get along well. But if you face bumpy times and illness comes along… You could say that it only makes you stronger. But that can also be the moment when you have to leave each other for a while.”
In 2019, De Wild and Gulsen were a set for the first time, but after the death of Gulsen’s ex James Harris the two broke up. The entrepreneur needed time to sort everything out. Ultimately, De Wild and Gulsen found each other again, but not much later colon cancer discovered at the radio maker. “I also think that I have been ill for a long time,” he says in the BNNVara program. “All this time she took care of me day and night. I also understand that at some point the end is over. And you remain a patient for a long time afterwards.”
In terms of intimacy, the couple grew very close during that time. That feeling is still there, so De Wild does not completely rule out a reunion. “Who knows, we might find each other again. You never know how things will turn out, but I really enjoyed working with her.”
