Rutte disagrees with VVD support for VAT purchasing power plan | Inland

The VVD faction in the House of Representatives supported a plan by JA21 on Thursday. That wants to let the extra money that comes into the treasury as a result of the high prices of VAT revenues flow back into the wallets of citizens. Thanks to the support of the liberals, who were the only coalition party to vote in favour, the motion received a majority, even though Minister Kaag (Finance) had previously opposed it.

Even after the support of a majority of the House, Kaag said on Friday that he was not interested in returning the VAT revenues. According to her, it is not in line with the budget rules: “You need rules to continue to act consistently and consistently.” Prime Minister Rutte was unpleasantly surprised on Friday by the support of his own party for the JA-21 plan. He also immediately puts it aside: “We are going to stick to the budget rules.”

Kaag still sees an opportunity to accommodate the House. “Ultimately, it is about one-time reduction in purchasing power for the large group of middle incomes,” she interprets the wish. “We’re going to look at that in August.” The cabinet will then discuss the budget for next year towards Budget Day.
