Russia’s New Agreement for Supply of Tor-M2 Anti-Aircraft Missile Systems after Heavy Losses in Ukraine

The heavy losses of Tor-M2 in Ukraine forced Russia to conclude a new agreement for the supply of short-range anti-aircraft missile systems. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation signed a contract with the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant “Kupol”.

What is known

Details of the agreement are not specified at the moment. The cost of one anti-aircraft missile system is estimated at $25 million. According to analysts Oryxthere is photo and video evidence that since February 24, 2022, the Russian army has lost more than 20 air defense systems, including the very rare Tor-M2DT, optimized for operation in difficult Arctic conditions.

Tor-M2 is a modernized Russian anti-aircraft missile system that appeared in 2016. It is capable of shooting down air threats at ranges up to 12 km with an altitude range of up to 10 km, while the radar detects targets within a radius of up to 32 km.

Modernized in 2016, Tor-M2 is currently the latest version of the anti-aircraft missile system. The air defense system has an ammunition load of 16 vertical-launched 9M338 anti-aircraft missiles.
