Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. More visits to Polish petrol stations

The number of visits to Polish gas stations at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine increased by over 36 percent, according to a special analysis by experts from Proxi.cloud and UCE Research. The heavy traffic continued for three days.

According to experts from Proxi.cloud and the UCE Research platform, on February 24 this year, the day the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, there was a sharp increase in visits to Polish gas stations. Compared to the previous day, it was over 36 percent. The increased traffic continued for three days, i.e. until February 26 this year.

Expert: Panic is under control among Poles

– Currently, you can observe a movement similar to that recorded before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or even slightly smaller. This may indicate the control of panic among Poles – assessed Adam Grochowski from the technology company Proxi.cloud. As he noted, in the first two days the traffic was much above the average values recorded before the Russian attack, although on the fourth day from that moment on, a significant decline was visible.

The analysis shows that on February 28 this year. The activity of petrol station customers clearly decreased compared to Monday, February 21. According to Mateusz Choluj from Proxi.cloud, the drivers did not start refueling more often, but in the face of the war with our neighbors, they drove to the station faster, because they preferred to make sure that their cars had full fuel tanks. – Currently, the situation at petrol stations is stable and there is no cause for concern in this respect – he pointed out.

He added that comparing the data from the first days of the war (February 24-28) to the same days a week earlier (February 17-21 this year), the number of visits to petrol stations increased by nearly 13 percent. From February 24 to 27 this year. this result is much higher, but the panic turned out to be so short that the overall increase in the number of visits to the examined facilities returns to normal with each day of the conflict, he assessed.

According to Krzysztof Zych from UCE Research, there are differences in the occupancy rates at stations in different parts of Poland in the first four days of the war. The greatest increase was recorded in the province. Łódź – by 23 percent, Lublin – by 20 percent, and also West Pomeranian – by 19 percent. In turn, the smallest difference occurred in the south of the country, i.e. in Opole – 10 percent, Silesia and Lesser Poland 8 percent each. – he gave.

Higher traffic across the country

As Chołuj assessed, panic passed through Poland relatively evenly. – The increase in traffic at stations in the east of the country was only 0.5 pp higher than in the western part – he assessed.

As he noted, similar results also apply to the size of cities. – In cities over 100,000 residents, average traffic after the start of the invasion increased by 13.6 percent. week to week, it is only 1 pp more than in cities below 100,000 population. This proves that Poles behave similarly, he said.

Proxi.cloud and the UCE Research platform reported that 3,798 petrol stations and 178,417 consumers in 16 provinces were monitored. The data was collected on February 14-28, 2022 via the so-called geofencing, i.e. virtual points on the map. They were standardized to one value, which is the average traffic recorded before the above-mentioned invasion, which was calculated on February 14-23, 2022.
