Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, said the missile hit a residential area and was preceded by air raid sirens. With this, people sought refuge in safe places. Russia has warned that it will retaliate against the incident. The defense ministry’s response was that the attack ‘will not go unpunished’.

In response to the attack, Russian forces destroyed 13 Ukrainian rockets that flew over Belgorod. They also claimed to have shot down 32 Ukrainian drones nationwide. Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a team of emergency response workers to Belgorod following the incident, Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council met on Saturday at the request of Russia. The Russian ambassador to the UN called the incident an act of terrorism by Ukraine. But the opposition tried to remind the international community that Moscow started the war.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it had destroyed a Ukrainian spy ship in the Black Sea, where Russian gas mining facilities are located. The Ukrainian ship was shot down by a Russian Su-30 aircraft. Moscow has also accused Ukraine of stepping up attacks against Russian interests using unmanned naval drones.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has not yet issued any public statements on the issue. In June last year, Russian-backed officials in Crimea accused Ukrainian forces of attacking drilling platforms owned by Chernomorneftegaz in the Black Sea. In 2014, Russia seized Chernomorneftegaz from Ukraine’s national gas operator, Naftogaz, as part of its annexation of Moscow.
