Russian troops dig 7-kilometer trenches on coast of Crimea

On the coast from Evpatoria to the village of Zaozernoye, Russian troops dug a line of trenches, 7 kilometers 800 meters long. This is evidenced by satellite images that are at the disposal of Krym.Realii and the Radio Liberty project Schemes.

Back in early March 2023, the length of the structures was a little more than three and a half kilometers. A satellite video in early March was published by the Ukrainian command “‎South”.

In early spring, the media received a wide response about the fact that fortifications were being built in Crimea right on the beaches near Evpatoria. Related video with trenches on the beaches was published online.

“It is unlikely that this has a direct bearing on the situation at the front. Well, because no matter how much we all would like, but a repetition of something like Operation Overlord, that is, the landing in Normandy in 1944 – a massive landing, a lot of landing ships, throwing large masses of infantry ashore, an airborne assault is descending – Unfortunately, this does not threaten us. Well, firstly, because we have, let’s say, few landing ships. It seems that here the Russians were more engaged in imitation of activities,” Ivan Kirichevsky, a military expert and columnist for the Defense Express military portal, told Krym.Realii.

Earlier, the Russian head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, said that Ukraine would not be able to de-occupy the peninsula thanks to fortification and the formation of defense.

On February 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the country was preparing for the de-occupation of Crimea.

Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Igor Zhovkva said in an interview with Krym.Realii that compromises on one or another part of the territory of Ukraine will never be the subject of negotiations with Russia. He also noted that now no one will say for sure how Crimea will be returned under the control of Kyiv, but “it will definitely happen.” According to him, “the diplomatic path (the return of Crimea) can complement the military one.”

Prior to this, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said that the United States of America supports Ukraine’s strikes on Russian military facilities in the annexed Crimea.

The former commander of the US Army in Europe, Ben Hodges, said that Ukraine would liberate Crimea by the end of summer 2023. And US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin believes that Ukraine has a “good chance” to take the initiative on the battlefield.

At the same time, polls show that more than 60% of Ukrainians support an attempt to militarily liberate the occupied Crimea – even if this means a longer war with the Russian Federation and less Western assistance.
