CRIMEA – A fighter jet Russia crashed off the coast of Crimea on Thursday as the Moscow-Kyiv war continued to heat up. Moscow did not specify the type of plane that crashed, but Ukrainian and Western media said it was a Su-35.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-appointed governor of Sevastopol, confirmed the crash via Telegram. He said the pilot was ejected from the plane and no civil infrastructure was damaged in the crash.

Details about the crash remain unclear, and the cause is unknown.

“He was picked up by a rescue team from the Sevastopol Rescue Service at a distance of two hundred meters from the shore. His life is not in danger,” wrote Razvozhayev, who was quoted as saying NewsweekFriday (29/3/2024).

The crash occurred as the war between Russia and Ukraine has spread to the Crimean Peninsula, a region that broke away from Ukraine and joined Russia in 2014.

On March 23, Ukraine attacked two large Russian landing ships in Crimea.

Radio Free Europe-Radio Liberty reported that the plane that crashed in Crimea on Thursday was a Russian Su-35 fighter jet.

Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister, wrote in a posting in X that a Russian military blog said the plane was likely shot down by Russian air defenses, but this report has still not been confirmed by authorities.
