MOSCOW – A Su-24 bomber Russia crashed in the Belgorod region during a training flight, on Tuesday.

The fate of the two crew members remains unknown more than 12 hours after the incident.

Ministry of Defense, as quoted InterfaxWednesday (13/9/2023), said the Su-24 plane was not equipped with weapons and crashed in an uninhabited area.

A rescue helicopter has been sent to the crash site. The cause of the bomber crash is not yet known.

Local media identified the crash site in the rural district of Kalachyovsky, located just west of the city of Volgograd and about 300 kilometers east of the Luhansk region.

Luhansk is a region that broke away from Ukraine and joined Russia. However, Ukraine considers it to be Russia’s annexed territory.

“Things are not looking good for the pilot,” an unnamed law enforcement official told a local news site V1.ru on Tuesday night.

On Wednesday morning, V1.ru reported that two anonymous channels on the Telegram app said both Su-24 crew members died in the crash, but the claims could not be confirmed.

The Ministry of Defense has also not concluded that the two Su-24 crew members died in the accident.

The Russian military has experienced several deadly air crashes since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine last year.

In July, a pilot was killed in a training flight crash in the Sea of Azov, not far from Ukraine, and in October 2022, 15 people were killed when a Su-34 collided with an apartment building in the Russian city of Yeysk.
