UPDATE ON THE SITUATION – Six three-story buildings and five houses were damaged during a Russian strike in this town in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian authorities said.

Three injured and five missing after a Russian strike in a town in the East, around twenty villages in the North-East evacuated by the Ukrainian authorities… Le Figaro takes stock of the war in Ukraine this Tuesday, January 16.

Three injured and five missing after strike in New York, city in the east of the country

Russian bombings injured at least three people Monday evening in New York, a small town in eastern Ukraine, but five other people are still believed to be under the rubble of affected buildings, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday. On Monday evening, the Russian army attacked this town, located in the Donetsk region, using guided bombs, the ministry said.

«We are aware of three injuries. There are probably five other people under the rubble“, he added. Six three-story buildings and five houses were damaged, according to authorities. New York City is located very close to the eastern front line. In recent weeks, kyiv and Moscow have increased their bombings, a sign of an escalation while the conflict has lasted for almost two years.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) said on Tuesday it had noted a 26% increase in the number of civilians killed or injured in attacks in the country in December compared to November. This figure only concerns cases that could be verified by this institution. The real increase is therefore “probably higher», Warned the HRMMU.

«The number of civilian casualties had declined steadily in 2023, but the wave of attacks from late December to early January interrupted this trend», Said its head of mission, Danielle Bell, quoted in the press release. The arrival of very cold weather further complicates the lives of civilians, noted the HRMMU.

Around twenty villages in the North-East evacuated

Ukraine on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of 26 villages in the Kharkiv region, in the northeast of the country, due to repeated assaults by the Russian army in the area. “In view of the situation, we are implementing a compulsory evacuation of the population of the communities of Kindrachivska and Kourylivska in the Kupiansk district», indicated on social networks the regional governor Oleg Sinegoubov.

Its publication lists the names of the 26 localities concerned, where 3,043 people live, including 279 children. The Kupiansk district has been the subject of attacks by Russian forces for months. They have made minimal gains there, but still hope to break through the Ukrainian defenses.

This entire area had been occupied by Russia at the start of the invasion ordered in February 2022 by Vladimir Putin, until a lightning attack by the Ukrainians liberated the region in September of the same year, forcing Moscow’s troops to a humiliating retreat. Russia went on the offensive again in this area during the summer of 2023, while Ukraine attempted, without success, a major counter-offensive in the Donbass (east) and the south.

Since the fall and the failure of Ukrainian ambitions for reconquest, Russian forces have been pushing in the North-East, in the Kupiansk area, and in the East, particularly around the town of Avdiïvka. kyiv assures to hold and inflict significant losses on the Russians, but also insists to its Western allies on its needs in arms and ammunition to be able to continue to resist.

The Kharkiv region, where Kupiansk is located, borders Russia and its eponymous capital is the second largest city in Ukraine. Moscow constantly bombs the area, including residential areas. In October, a particularly deadly Russian strike killed more than fifty people in the village of Groza, while they were participating in a funeral ceremony in this town which had 330 inhabitants before the bombing.
