Russian President Putin Conducts Nuclear Deterrent Force Exercise in Surprise Drills

Russian President Vladimir Putin conducted a nuclear deterrent force exercise. This is reported on the official website of the Kremlin.

As part of the exercise, a Yars intercontinental missile was launched from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome at a test site in Kamchatka, and a Sineva missile was launched from the Barents Sea by the Tula nuclear submarine.

In addition, as part of the exercise, a Tu-95MS strategic bomber launched air-to-air missiles.

According to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu’s report to Putin, the drills included, among other things, “a massive strategic offensive force nuclear strike in response to an enemy nuclear strike.”

Today, the Russian Federation Council approved the law on withdrawal from the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Russian authorities explained their actions by the fact that many other countries, especially the United States, had not ratified the treaty.

Earlier this month, Putin said Russia had conducted a “last successful test” of a nuclear-powered cruise missile.

The experimental weapon, first announced in 2018, was hailed as having potentially unlimited range, but President Putin’s information was not independently confirmed.

The latest tests will be seen as a show of force that coincides with Moscow’s deratification of an international nuclear test ban treaty.

Parliament finished passing a law withdrawing Russia’s ratification of the treaty on Wednesday.

Putin urged ministers to support the change to reflect the position of the United States, which has signed but never ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The CTBT, agreed in 1996, bans “any test explosion of a nuclear weapon or other nuclear explosion” anywhere in the world.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine last February, raising fears of nuclear war.

In June, Russia deployed the first batch of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. Putin said they would only be used if Russia’s territory or state was threatened.

The US government says there is no indication that the Kremlin plans to use nuclear weapons to attack Ukraine.
