Russian peacekeepers have gone to Nagorno-Karabakh / Article / LSM.lv

The first group of Russian peacekeepers has gone to Nagorno-Karabakh. The task of the military will be to control the ceasefire in the area legally owned by Azerbaijan but partly controlled by Armenian forces.

Just a few hours after the agreement was reached, three Russian military transport planes landed at Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. They housed 80 military personnel, as well as vehicles and other equipment. In total, almost 2,000 peacekeepers are planned to be deployed in Karabakh, and they will be deployed in the region for at least five years.

Under the agreement between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia, the military will set up observation points along the contact line in the region and in the so-called Lachin Corridor, which connects the region with Armenia. President of the main ally of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Regs Taipa Erdogan, has also expressed support for the ceasefire regime.

CONTEXT:

On the morning of September 27, at the actual border of Nagorno-Karabakh Heavy fighting began, and during that time the Azerbaijani army managed to seize about one – fifth of the territory previously controlled by Armenian forces.

There have been hostile relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the 1990s, when the war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region was fought.
