Russian Military’s Use of RBK-500 Cluster Bombs in Ukraine War Zone

The Russian military first used RBK-500 cluster bombs in the Ukraine war zone. The strikes were carried out on positions of the Ukrainian troops, lenta.ru reported.

It is said that they were used en masse by the Russian military in the South Donetsk direction – this happened near the village of Staromayorskoe.

The RBK-500 began to be used by the troops in 1987.

According to military expert Yuri Knutov, the RBK-500 was dropped from a height of several kilometers, one ammunition weighs about half a ton. One such cartridge contains many “fragmentation bombs, each weighing 400 grams”, which scatter over great distances on impact. “The container opens at a certain height and then the ammunition is dispersed,” he explained.

In addition, the expert said that the RBK-500 is designed to destroy enemy infantry and personnel. Now Ukraine continues to organize “meat attacks” in some areas, including using cluster bombs, so Russian troops have had to take similar measures.

In mid-July, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia was refraining from using cluster munitions during the North Eastern Military District because it understood their threat to the civilian population. At the same time, he added that if Washington supplies Ukraine with such bombs, then Russian troops will have to use similar weapons against the Ukrainian armed forces in response.

The Russian armed forces have cluster bombs that are “much more effective than the American ones”. Thus, the Russian minister responded to the US plans to transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine.

He also noted that neither Moscow, Washington, nor Kiev had joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Namely, it says that the stockpiling and transfer of projectiles that disperse submunitions is prohibited.
