Russian Loss of Bakhmut and the Significance for the War in Ukraine

“In Russia, it was presented as a huge success,” NBS major Jānis Slaidiņš said in the TV24 program “Actual about the war in Ukraine” in response to the question why the loss of Bakhmut might be painful for the Russians.

He recalls that the battle for Bakhmut lasted ten months until it was finally captured.

If the Ukrainians succeed in recapturing Bakhmut, then Russia will be told that “the operation did not achieve its goals” and that Russia is actually at war with NATO.

It has already been announced that Ukrainian troops are making progress in the Bakhmut district and in the southern direction, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army announced on Tuesday.

“While the defense forces are conducting offensive strike operations, the enemy [Bahmutas rajonā] was forced to withdraw from the positions near Andrijivka,” General Staff representative Andriys Kovaliov announced on Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, the Russians have carried out unsuccessful offensive operations in the areas northwest of Orihovo-Vasillivka, south of Ivanivsk and west of Klishchiivka.

On the southern front, Ukrainian troops achieved success near the village of Staromajorske. According to the representative of the General Staff, the defense forces are currently strengthening their positions there.
