Russian gas pipelines to Europe: one already stopped, now the other is losing

The leak came to light yesterday due to a sharp drop in pressure on the construction site. How this could have happened is still unclear and an investigation is ongoing. Last night it became clear that the pressure in the Nord Stream 1 has also decreased. It is unclear exactly how it works, after all, the pipeline has been closed for weeks.

Security zone around the Danish island

The Danish authorities report a gas leak in the Baltic Sea, through which the pipeline runs. The ships were therefore asked to keep their distance from Bornholm Island, where a safe zone was established.

Nord Stream 2 is actually expected to be released this year, but a few days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany decided to stop the approval process. Nord Stream 2 made it possible to double the amount of Russian gas to Germany.

Nord Stream 1 has been closed for weeks. According to Russia, this is due to technical problems. The European Commission accuses the Russian state-owned company Gazprom of interrupting the flow of gas “under false pretenses”.

“Political means of pressure”

European leaders also see shutting off the Russian gas tap primarily as a political means of pressure. The European Union has imposed numerous sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine, and this would be retaliation.

Gas prices in Europe rose to record highs this summer following the initial announcement of the Nord Stream 1 unscheduled maintenance.
