Russian Federation Withdraws from “Grain Agreement”: Impact on Ukraine’s Grain Export and Global Prices

According to the head of the Kremlin, he intended to meet with Erdogan even before the presidential elections in Turkey, but they decided to postpone these plans.

“We agreed that we would see each other. Either he will come to us, or I will go to him. We’ll see …” Putin said.

So, the Russian dictator said, he and Erdogan will hold telephone talks next Wednesday.

Putin also left unanswered the journalist’s question about whether he considers the departure of Mariupol defense commanders from Turkey to Ukraine a “violation” of agreements between Ankara and Moscow.

“The agreements were … there will be no other comments,” he said.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that Putin is ignoring the Turkish president’s attempts to negotiate a return to the “grain deal”. In particular, diplomats spoke about it. It is also noted that such behavior of the Kremlin may be due to Erdogan’s decision to return the defenders of Azovstal to Ukraine, as well as Ankara’s approval of Sweden’s entry into NATO.

Withdrawal of the Russian Federation from the “grain agreement”

On July 17, Russia announced its withdrawal from the “grain agreement”, which was valid for a year and allowed the safe export of Ukrainian food from the Black Sea ports.

Ukraine will now have to rely almost entirely on expensive routes through the European Union, and the cheapest alternative artery, the Danube River, may not be able to increase its volumes as much as expected after the bombing.

According to the International Monetary Fund, as a result of this, world grain prices will increase by 10-15%.

We add that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky invited Turkey and the UN to continue the “grain initiative” in a trilateral format.
