Russian Defense Ministry Recruiting Prisoners for War against Ukraine: British Intelligence Report

The Russian Defense Ministry is actively practicing the idea of PMC “Wagner” to recruit prisoners to participate in the war against Ukraine.

British intelligence reports that in April alone, the Russian Ministry of Defense managed to recruit about 10,000 prisoners.

Today, May 11, at press service The British Ministry of Defense paid attention to such a topic as the recruitment of prisoners in the Russian Federation to serve in the Armed Forces.

The pioneers in this matter were the Wagner PMC and personally Prigozhin, who, back in the summer of 2022, after heavy losses in the ranks of the occupiers, turned their attention to Russian prisons.

However, already in February 2023, this idea was crushed by representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry. In Moscow, they forbade Prigozhin to recruit prisoners into the ranks of mercenaries, transferring this matter to Shoigu and Co.

The Russian Defense Ministry’s prisoner recruitment campaign is part of a broader and more intense effort by the Russian military to increase its numbers. Thus, the Kremlin is trying to avoid the introduction of a new mandatory mobilization, which is already very unpopular among the Russian public.

However, if PMC “Wagner” had a contract for at least 6 months, then the RF Ministry of Defense – two years.

Earlier, we reported that Rogozin began to think about the second wave of mobilization in the Russian Federation due to large losses in the ranks of the armed forces RF.

And Peskov told how “SVO” is different from “war” and why Putin’s army is not yet in Kyiv.
