Russian Athletes Forced into Early Retirement Due to International Competition Ban

Russian athletes one by one say goodbye to the hopes of returning to the international arena.

The isolation of Russian sports in the form of a ban on athletes from the Russian Federation from participating in international competitions, caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine, is forcing athletes from this country to end their sports careers ahead of schedule, because in the current conditions they do not see prospects for returning to tournaments of the highest level.

Another Russian athlete who announced her retirement due to sanctions was 31-year-old European curling champion Galina Arsenkina.

An athlete whose words leads The press service of the Russian Curling Federation admits that the decisive factor in her decision to retire early was the closure of access to international competitions.

“This decision was not easy for me, but it is absolutely balanced and deliberate”she added.

It is worth noting that the curling player’s statement was made after the executive committee of the Russian Olympic Committee banned Russian athletes from signing declarations condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine in order to be admitted to international competitions in a neutral status the day before. Thus, athletes from the Russian Federation have lost almost the last opportunity to compete in the international arena, including at the Olympic Games. There are still options for changing citizenship, and, as previously reported, some Russian athletes have already begun to resort to it. In particular, about the transition to the Danish national team announced the best Russian short track skater Sofya Prosvirina, and rower Anna Prakaten announced plans to play for the national team of Uzbekistan.

Meanwhile, well-known Russian track and field athlete Maria Lasitskene, the high jump champion in Tokyo, said that her international career was probably over because of the sanctions.

Recall that the Russian weightlifting team in full strength was not allowed to the Grand Prix stage in Cuba, which is an Olympic qualification, due to the refusal to sign declarations condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russian football failed to break through international isolation: the government of Cameroon banned its cathedral from playing a friendly match with the Russians.
