Russia wants to send half a million tourists a year to Cuba

Russia aspires to become the main country that sends tourists to Cuba in the coming years and unseat Canada in that position. At least that is what they want and for this they set the goal of sending at least half a million tourists a year. The Russian government and that of the island are creating all the conditions for this.

According to reports from the magazine Russian Sputnik, this week at the business meeting between businessmen from both countries, new projects were announced to increase the annual visits of Russian tourists to half a million, especially to the tourist poles of Varadero, Cayo Coco and Havana.

“I support the desire of the Minister of Tourism of Cuba, Juan Carlos García in his objective to bring the flow of tourists from Russia to 500,000 a year, in this way Russia could reach the top, surpassing the most developed destination in Canada. With joint efforts, I am sure that we will succeed,” said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernishenko.

For his part, the Cuban official highlighted that “Russia has historically been one of the main issuing markets in Cuba, it has always been positioned among the top four emitters and in the last year, during the pandemic, it came to occupy first place.” .

For this, as of July 1, commercial flights from Moscow to Varadero will resume, through the Aeroflot fleet. While the Nordwind charter will continue connecting with Varadero and Cayo Coco as it has been up to now. As if that were not enough, an exclusive hotel for Russian visitors is also expected to be built in Havana, a project that we had already advanced in these pages.

“The maximum that has come to Cuba is 178,000 Russians in a year and this year we thought to overcome the barrier of 200,000 Russians,” added the director of Tourism in Cuba.
