Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaRussia and Ukraine accused each other of launching several drone attacks against each other’s territory on Wednesday (30/8/2023).

This made the tension of war even more heated which led to new casualties.

Following are other developments related to the Russian-Ukrainian war, as compiled CNBC Indonesia from various sources:

Ukraine Bombards 6 Russian Territories

On Wednesday, Ukraine attacked six points of Russian territory, including an airport field where they destroyed a military transport plane.

Russian officials, quoted by Reuters, said the attacks took place in the Pskov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Orlov, Ryazan and Moscow regions.

In Pskov, northern Russia, more than 600 km (400 miles) from Ukraine, a large fire broke out at a military airfield. The TASS news agency reported that at least four Il-76 giant transport planes were damaged, two of which caught fire.

Footage published by the governor of Pskov on Telegram shows a large fire accompanied by sirens and explosions. Another video posted online shows anti-aircraft systems in action around the town, which is just 32 km (20 miles) east of Russia’s border with NATO member Estonia.

Moscow claims to have thwarted all attacks on Russia. Russia usually describes all Ukrainian drone strikes as unsuccessful, despite the damage done on the ground.

Russia says Ukrainian drones tried to attack a TV tower in the Bryansk region. No fatalities were reported. Moscow also said its aircraft had destroyed four Ukrainian fast attack ships carrying up to 50 paratroopers in the Black Sea.

Russian Counterattack

On the other hand, Ukrainian officials say Russia launched a massive joint strike on the capital Kyiv overnight using drones and missiles.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said via Telegram on Wednesday that Russia used what it believed to be an Iranian-made Shahed drone in the attack. It said that the Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber then launched a missile targeting the capital.

“Several drone groups are heading to Kyiv from different directions,” he said.

More than 20 enemy targets were destroyed by air defense forces, the government said, but due to falling debris in various districts of Kyiv, two people were killed and three were injured.

That night’s attack came as Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out multiple drone strikes against six areas in central and northwestern Russia late on Wednesday, including the Moscow region. One attack purportedly damaged several aircraft at an airfield in northwestern Russia. Ukraine has not publicly commented on the attack.

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Coup Threats

Former CIA member and analyst Larry Johnson said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was under threat of a coup.

In a Russia Today report, Johnson said a coup would likely be staged by the country’s military. This is because the country’s counterattack against Russia did not bring significant breakthroughs.

“Zelensky is likely to be ousted via coup in the next three to four weeks, due to great discontent among troops on the eastern front,” Johnson told Redacted host Clayton Morris.

The Ukrainian counterattack was said to have failed to achieve a major breakthrough. This has even made Kyiv’s Western allies such as the United States (US) begin to express disillusionment with Ukraine’s tactics.

Johnson added that Kyiv is already completely dependent on the West. However, Ukraine’s increasing needs on the battlefield are growing, while success is yet to be seen.

“The US strategy in this conflict is to trap Russia in an unwinnable war and encourage regime change in Moscow,” he added. “Instead, this will happen to Ukraine, and Washington will have to find a way to withdraw from the conflict, because they have grossly underestimated Russia’s economic and military might.”

Prigozhin Plane Crash Investigation

The Kremlin on Wednesday (30/8/2023) said in the results of an investigation there was an element of intent in the plane crash that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin.

This was Russia’s first explicit acknowledgment that it was possible Prigozhin had been killed.

“It is clear that various versions are being considered, including that – you know what we are talking about – say, a deliberate atrocity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“Let’s wait for the results of our Russian investigation.”

Prigozhin’s Embraer private jet flew from Moscow to St. Petersburg. Petersburg fell north of Moscow and killed all 10 people on board on 23 August, including two other Wagner figures, four of his bodyguards, and three crew members.

So far the Kremlin itself has rejected accusations of masterminding the crash. Speculation that Putin killed Prigozhin is an absolute lie, according to the Kremlin.

Makam Prigozhin

Followers of Russian mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin laid flowers, messages and poetry at his grave on Wednesday. Most of them praised boss Wagner as a fearless fighter after he was killed in a plane crash.

Prigozhin was buried at the Porokhovskoe cemetery in his hometown of St Petersburg on Tuesday, away from the media spotlight.

A man wearing a Wagner mercenary shirt and a cap emblazoned with the Russian flag was among those who paid their respects at a tomb decorated with red roses and carnations on an Orthodox wooden cross with the words “Prigozhin, Yevgeny Viktorovich 1961 – 2023” and “to be a warrior is to live forever.” “
