Russia is in the process of strengthening its position in southern Ukraine, including outside the Donbas, the British Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

Soldiers, equipment and supplies are being moved between Mariupol and Zaporizhzhya and in Kherson. Also in Melitopol, the Russian army is said to further tighten security measures.

According to the British, Russia appears to be responding to a series of successful Ukrainian attacks on some 30 Russian logistics hubs and ammunition depots with these measures. Those attacks have damaged Russia’s supply lines.

Explosions in Mikolayiv

Given the pressure on Russian forces, the reinforcements in the south, while fighting in the Donbas continues at the same time, seems to indicate that the Russians are taking the threat from Ukraine seriously.

The air raid siren went off early this morning in the southern city of Mikolayiv. The mayor of the city wrote on Telegram that at least ten explosions were heard in the city. It is not known if there were any casualties. Nikopol came under fire from Russian Grad missiles. Two people were killed as a result.

Next phase offensive

According to a spokesman for the Ukrainian military intelligence service, Russia is preparing for the next phase of its offensive in Ukraine. Yesterday, Moscow announced that it would further intensify its attacks in all operational areas.

“It’s not just rocket attacks from the air and sea,” the spokesman said. “We see shelling all along the front line. Aircraft and combat helicopters are being used actively.”
