Russia sends the world’s largest submarine to the scrap heap

“The submarine Dmitry Donskoy has been removed from the fleet and will be scrapped,” the state-run RIA Novosti news agency quoted an unnamed Russian source as saying.

Dmitrij Donskoij, a Typhoon-class submarine serving in the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet since 1980, was 175 meters long.

The status as the world’s largest submarine will be taken over by the 184-metre-long Oscar II-class nuclear submarine Belgorod, which was ordered earlier in July.

Dmitrij Donskoij was last spotted together with Belgorod in Lake Kvitsjøen. Analysts speculated at the time that Dmitrij Donskoij accompanied Belgorod for sea trials before the latter’s commissioning.

The case was first published in The Moscow Times.
