Russia is secretly preparing a provocation action in Ukraine to have an excuse to invade the neighboring country. The White House spokesman said in a statement.
According to a Pentagon official, there is evidence that Russia has trained people to carry out an attack in Ukraine against pro-Russian insurgents in the east of the country. They would also have been taught how to use explosives in the sabotage action.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry also states that Russia is using provocateurs. Putin’s spokesman denies the accusation: “So far, all these statements are unfounded”.
100,000 Russian soldiers
The information from the US about the provocation plans comes at the end of a week with three meetings between Russian and Western officials. The tense situation on the border of Ukraine was central to this. About 100,000 Russian soldiers are gathered there. Talks about the withdrawal of those troops are difficult.
Russia is demanding that NATO withdraw from all countries under Russian influence during the Cold War. The Russians also want a guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO.
