Russia: Alexei Navalny was examined in civil hospital

According to his team, the Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny, who went on hunger strike in a prison camp, was taken to a hospital outside the prison for an examination. He was examined in the city of Vladimir, east of Moscow, tweeted Leonid Volkov, a confidante of Navalny. “Numerous examinations were carried out.” The results were initially unknown, but were evaluated by independent doctors.

This also includes Navalny’s personal doctor. Together with her colleagues, she then appealed in a letter published by the media to Navalny that he should end his hunger strike immediately. Should he continue to eat no food, this would further damage his health and in the worst case lead to death. The investigations were therefore already carried out on Tuesday.

Navalny’s team is calling for independent medical care for the anti-Kremlin detainees in the prison camp. He has been on hunger strike for more than three weeks to enforce this. On Sunday he had already been transferred to another penal camp with an infirmary.

Nationwide protests

The politician recently complained of back problems, paralysis in the limbs, fever and cough. How he is actually doing cannot be independently verified. As recently as Wednesday, tens of thousands of nationwide protests demanded access to Navalny by independent doctors.

The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer also addressed the situation of the opponent of the Kremlin during a visit to Moscow. “I got the statement that medical care was guaranteed,” said Kretschmer afterwards. That is the expectation on the German side. “That is a minimum of humanitarian support that you have to give someone,” said Kretschmer.
