Russia accuses US of ordering drone attack on Kremlin, denies involvement of Ukraine

Moscow said Wednesday it foiled a drone attack targeting the Kremlin and denounced an assassination attempt on Vladimir Putin. Ukraine denies any involvement.

The Russian presidency accuses this Thursday the United States of having ordered the alleged attack of Ukrainian drones against the Kremlin, that Moscow claims to have foiled the day beforeand in which kyiv denies any involvement.

“The efforts of kyiv and Washington to deny any responsibility (in the alleged attack) are totally ridiculous”, denounces to the press the spokesman of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov.

“Decisions about such attacks are not made in Kiev, but in Washington. kyiv only applies what is asked of it. Washington must understand that we know it,” he said.

Enhanced security in Moscow

Dmitry Peskov also said that Vladimir Putin is working this Thursday inside the Kremlin, where he will have “an important discussion with the Minister of Economic Development”.

After the alleged incursion of drones into the heart of Moscow, a first since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, security measures will be reinforced in the capital.

“All of that is going to be reinforced, of course, and it’s all been reinforced already in the context of preparations for the May 9 military parade, when Russia celebrates victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 with great fanfare.

kyiv denies any involvement

On Wednesday, Russia claimed to have shot down two Ukrainian drones which targeted the Kremlin in Moscow, the most spectacular attack attributed to kyiv since the Russian offensive in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, denies any attack.

One of the Ukrainian president’s advisers, Mykhaïlo Podoliak, accuses Moscow of “staged” to justify “a major terrorist attack in Ukraine”.

The head of American diplomacy Antony Blinken declares for his part to take “everything that comes out of the Kremlin with great caution”, while the Russian accusations surprise many analysts.

Two drone attacks this Thursday

In the aftermath of this alleged attack, two drones hit oil refineries on Thursday in southwestern Russia, near Ukraine, according to local media and authorities.

A first fire, now extinguished, broke out in the reservoir of an oil installation located in the Krasnodar region. About an hour later, Vasily Golubiev, the governor of the Rostov region bordering Ukraine, announced that a drone had descended on a local refinery, causing an explosion and a quickly extinguished fire.

For nearly a week, a series of drone attacks and two railway sabotages have hit Russian regions close to Ukraine and annexed Crimea, a few days May 9 military celebrations.
