Runaway crane overturns containers with hazardous substances | Inland

One of the containers contains triethylaluminium. This is an extremely flammable substance that can catch fire when exposed to air. The agent is used in industry and can also be used to ignite rockets. According to DCMR, no leakage has been identified. The other container, which contains lithium ion batteries, is also intact and “does not pose a hazard,” according to the environmental agency.

The incident happened in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday at the ECT Delta Terminal, on the Maasvlakte. The work there will take all day, DCMR expects. If the containers with hazardous substances are accessible, the fire brigade will assist in securing them.

Several containers toppled over and were shifted when the unmanned harbor crane “continued to move.” How that could have happened is not yet clear.
