In its dialogue with the Republic of North Macedonia, Bulgaria defends not only national interests, but above all the values of the European Union, which are based on democracy and respect for human rights. This was stated by President Rumen Radev, who held a telephone conversation with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier today. The conversation was held at the initiative of the German President on the eve of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will be held on October 5 and 6 in Slovenia.
The entire region will benefit from progress in the European integration process of the Republic of North Macedonia, Rumen Radev pointed out and added that Bulgaria expects concrete results regarding the observance of human rights in our southwestern neighbor, which would speed up this process.
“At the moment, a population census is underway in the Republic of North Macedonia, and a number of signals are being received in Bulgaria about exerting pressure on people who openly express their Bulgarian identity, which is unacceptable for a country applying for EU membership,” said Rumen Radev. The President also emphasized that the numerous declarations and promises made by the state leadership of the Republic of North Macedonia to Bulgaria over the years remain unfulfilled, including the bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation signed in 2017. Therefore, our country insists on legally binding guarantees in the bilateral dialogue on the part of the Republic of North Macedonia.
