During a collision between a cargo ship and a rowing boat between Rijswijk and Voorburg, five water sports enthusiasts ended up in the trekvliet. It concerned members of a student rowing association. They had to be checked for hypothermia.
The accident happened in the early afternoon. The skipper of the freighter passed under a bridge and did not see the rowboat. According to an eyewitness, the students tried to steer to the side, but were blown back to the middle of the Trekvliet by strong winds, reports Broadcaster West.
Student almost passed over
Bystanders tried to warn the skipper, but he was unable to stop his boat in time. The rowers therefore decided to jump out of their rowboat, says the eyewitness. Four students made it to shore without any problems, but one of the students was nearly run over by the freighter.
