In Rotterdam, 64 new corona infections were added on Sunday. This meant that the Maas city had the largest number of new infections that day. 4.8 people per 100,000 inhabitants are currently tested positive for the virus. In the Amsterdam-Amstelland region, that number is 4.4. In Utrecht the counter is at 0.7.
“We see an upward trend in the number of infections and we find this worrying,” says a spokesman for the GGD.
“Since the easing, there have been more outbreaks in our region within groups that do not keep a distance. People visit each other at home and, for example, go out for a barbecue outside when the weather is good. Keeping less distance happens in families and among friends.”
It is difficult to say why Rotterdam specifically has the highest number of infections. The GGD is currently conducting source and contact research within a number of cluster groups. This happens among other things in health care companies, in the port and, for example, among a group of between ten and twenty Rotterdam students.
“Among students, contact is looser and they are less accustomed to ringing the bell for a cold or sore throat. They probably don’t realize what responsibility they have,” said the spokesperson. “But it is certainly not the case that students are the main cause of the increase in the number of infections.”
Rotterdam, safety region and GGD in consultation about possible measures
Presumably, there were a number of social gatherings two weeks ago that played into the growth in the number of corona infections. “This includes meetings at people’s homes, at the office, when people exercise together, at drinks and beach parties.”
The municipality of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Safety Region and the GGD will discuss any measures in response to the number of infections incurred on Monday.
Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb of Rotterdam and Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam left last week remember that they want the cabinet to investigate the obligation to wear a mouth mask outdoors.
