Roman Kreuziger: The lie detector was the icing on the cake, today there is a lack of respect in the group

IN TODAY’S EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN, AMONG OTHERS:
  • From competitor to sporting director (0:35)
  • The transformation of the group (10:35)
  • A successful year 2013 (13:01)
  • Problems with the biological passport and the lie detector (16:22)
  • Because of Sagan on the sofa (32:05)
  • Washers for cyclists (37:50)

The Czech cyclist probably had his most successful year in 2013, when he won the prestigious Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands and finished fifth overall in the Tour de France as Alberto Contador. “Maybe if Alberto had said he wasn’t feeling his best, the podium would have been close,” Krueziger thinks in retrospect. However, he adds in one breath that every driver knows his position in the team very well.

He tested the leading position at the Tour de France in 2016 when Contador retired after crashing at the start of the race. Kreuziger eventually finished tenth, even though he was even second in the virtual standings for a while in the penultimate stage.

“It was a bit disappointing because the gaps were really minimal that year,” says Kreuziger, who has spent his last year as the Bahrain team’s sporting director, as well as running his own academy and a project to encourage respect between riders and cyclists.

In the podcast, Kreuziger also goes back to 2014, when he lost the Tour de France due to irregularities in his biological passport. To clear his name, he even took a lie detector test.

Which stage of the Tour de France was the most difficult for Kreuziger, how did Peter Sagan behave at the beginning of his career, why do the young people disrespect in the group and where do cyclists go to the bathroom during the race? Kreuziger talks about all this in today’s Dobojována episode, which you can watch on video or play in the audio player at the beginning of the article.
