Roma vs Ajax Ends 1-1, Giallorossi to the semi-finals of the Europa League

AS Roma ensure one ticket to the Europa League semifinals. The breakout was obtained after the Giallorossi drew 1-1 with ajax Amsterdam in the second leg of the quarterfinals.

At the Olimpico, Friday (16/4/2021) early morning WIB, Ajax appeared more dominant by controlling 73 percent of the ball. They even scored the first goal in the 49th minute through Brian Brobbey.

Even so, Rome, which relies on counterattacks, is no less effective. This was evidenced by the shot on target of the two teams, who both amounted to three. Paulo Fonseca’s squad finally managed to reply through Edin Dzeko’s goal in the 72nd minute.

This result led Roma to the semifinals with a 3-2 aggregate advantage, having previously won 2-1 in the first leg which was held in Amsterdam.

The course of the match

Roma threatening in the 5th minute. Through a counterattack, Lorenzo Pellegrini fired a left footed shot that led to the goal Ajax, but goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg managed to save the net.

Ajax only had a chance in the 10th minute through a header from Nicolas Tagliafico who took advantage of Dusan Tadic’s corner, but the direction was not right. In the 14th minute, Pellegrini’s long-range shot was tackled by Stekelenburg again.

Next there is Tadic who gets a chance to score a goal, but his shot in the 20th minute can be secured by the goalkeeper Roma, Pau Lopez. In the 36th minute, Lopez returned to block the Serbian player’s shot. Score 0-0 lasted until the break.

In the second half, Ajax who needed a goal to press right from the start. As a result, they managed to score a goal in the 49th minute.

Brian Brobbey, who had just entered in the 46th minute, listed his name on the scoreboard. Starting from the build-up at the back, Perr Schuurs sent a breakthrough bait to the front which Brobbey immediately received.

Lopez stepped forward, but Brobbey’s shot was enough to put Ajax 1-0 up.

This situation is encouraging Ajax. In the 56th minute, Tadic scored the second goal. However, referee Anthony Taylor annulled the goal. Through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) broadcast, it was seen that before the goal occurred, there was a Tagliafico violation against Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Ajax continues to press. Roma playing in the back, trying to counterattack every now and then. The tactics by the Giallorossi paid off in the 72nd minute.

Young defender Riccardo Calafiori took individual action, stabbing into the penalty box then sending a cross to Edin Dzeko. The Ajax rearguard tried to block him, but the ball headed towards Dzeko, who calmly threw the ball into Stekelenburg’s goal.

In the remaining time, Ajax continued to press Roma, but no more goals could be created by Erik ten Hag’s squad. The 1-1 score lasted until the end, making the aggregate 3-2 for Roma’s advantage.
